This or the Apocalypse Interview - Dead Years

This or the Apocalypse recently announced the coming of their new album Dead Years for September 25 under eOne Entertainment (North America) and LifeForce Records (Europe) along with the album's cover art. This will be the band's third release. Since the announcement of Dead Years, I had the chance to catch up with lead vocalist and lyricist Rick Armellino to talk about the band's excited and to get a deeper look at what we can expect come September 25.

Steve: What about the album Dead Years do you really like?
Rick: I like that the band got to show their voice a little bit more on every instrument.

Steve: What do you think the album says about you guys as a band?
Rick: It kind of has two faces to it. On one hand its really kind of depressing, and it kind of has this sad melodic sound to it. On the other hand it's very angry. The topics of the songs, some are the most personal we've ever written, indicating certain events between family members or other things that have happened to the band which is kind of a first for us. We've always written about things that were important to us, but I really don't think anybody could have looked at our lyrics and said, "Oh man this is about a very specific event that is being alluded to. I really wanted to change that on this album. On the other hand it's kind of socially conscious, almost political.

Steve: What reaction do you expect to get?
Rick: I'm not too worried about it, so I'm expecting a good reaction. This is the first album that I really think we went in not caring.

Steve: What's the difference between this album and the previous two releases you've put out?
Rick: We kind of approached this one in a completely different way. We had recorded some stuff before Monuments, but Monuments kind of had this very young sound to it. We were working with an engineer who it was the first full length he had put out on that level. We were all taking shots in the dark. With Haunt What's Left we worked with a very seasoned producer. Our goal going in to making that album was making something that sounded very real and very raw and sounding like a live band but very well produced. On the new album, it's kind of a mixed bag of a lot of things, but I think that the new album was made keeping it sounding like a good record. Rather than worrying about if it was going to have that live sound to it or anything like that. The new record is heavier, it's got a lot more depth to it, it has a lot of huge reverberated leads and a lot more experimenting on it.

Steve: You guys released the artwork as well. It's pretty creative and colorful. Talk about that.
Rick: The guy who made it is my best friend. He lives at my house with me. We had just talked about what it is we wanted to do, and he draw this bird with a human skull on it. I was like, "Sol that is awesome," and he was laughing but I was like, "I want to use that for TOTA." That night he ended up staying up all night and just drew the album artwork. It was unbelievable. He pulled out a lot of imagery from very old sci-fy movies. Our goal of the album artwork was to convey panic and a society that is so entrenched in the panic that they are not able to function. There's a sense of worrying, of hurry, of wanting answers and not getting them. Sol did that in an awesome way, and I really like the colors he used.

Steve: Why did you want to go with that sort of theme for the artwork?
Rick: One of my biggest fears being American is our system of propaganda and our system of mental control. It has really infiltrated every aspect of life.

Steve: Straying from the topic of the album, what is it you all like to do for fun?
Rick: We all like drinking good beer, and we're all pretty normal guys. We like to go fishing, build stuff, play an occasional video game. We all have girlfriends that are friends so they'll cook for us, and we'll all go out to eat together. We have sort of an American, happy group of friends.

Steve: What other bands are you really close with and really enjoy playing with?
Rick: Yeah, my friends that are in bands that can put us on tours where we get fed, like August Burns Red, We Came As Romans. No but we've got to tour with the Letlive, those are some of our favorite guys. We've got to tour with No Bragging Rights, they're really close friends of ours, Within the Ruins. I mean there are a lot of bands we've toured with and have become really good friends with.

Steve: You mentioned August Burns Red, and they're from the same area as you guys are. Did you all know each other before both bands started?
Rick: Yeah, we've all been friends for years. We knew them long before August Burns Red. We all use to go to "steak night" every Monday where everyone would go buy a steak and bring it to the house. The funny thing was, I think the only dudes that actually played at the time were Matt Greiner and Brent [Rambler]. Every now and then they'd go down on the drum kit and Matt would bring his double peddle, and they would jam up for us and we'd all clap and go back upstairs. I remember JB [Brubaker]  talking to me and said, "I am thinking about learning guitar," and was like, "I'm thinking about starting a band." Usually when somebody who's like 19 says that they're thinking about learning guitar, you usually don't get somebody who sits down and allots two hours a day and works their ass off. But that's what they did, and out of no where they put out an EP themselves and it's like, "Man, JB's band is pretty good." Then they get signed to Solid State eventually. TOTA has toured with them and it's weird  to meet kids with August Burns Red tattoos and be like, "Really? A tattoo of JB's band?" But yeah, they've always been close friends.

Steve: You are getting ready to release Dead Years and you've been on the road a bit, but what's next for you guys?
Rick: Well we're about to release that album, we have some bonus track stuff that we'll be releasing, we covered one of our favorite songs. I'm not going to say what that song is yet. We want to surprise everybody. We are getting ready for two pretty long tours we just signed up for. We'll also be shooting some music videos at the end of this month for two songs. Not saying what one's yet!

Make sure to check out Dead Years hitting stores September 25. In the meantime, here's a little teaser for you all.

Ronnie Radke Arrested

Falling In Reverse's frontman Ronnie Radke is reported to have been arrested yet again. According to the Glendale News-Press, Radke is reported to have been arrested this past Monday (August 6) at his home in Glendale on an outstanding warrant for an alleged domestic assault of his girlfriend.

When with his former band Escape The Fate in 2008, Radke was arrested for failing to check in with his probation officer after a violent altercation leaving 18-year-old Michael Cook dead in 2006. Radke spent two and a half years in prison and was released in 2010.

Now Radke's girlfriend apparently told police that he had "physically assaulted her," and a warrant for Radke's arrest was issued on May 1 of this year.

According to the Glendale News-Press, Radke is charged with a misdemeanor count of corporal injury to his girlfriend.

Radke is now out on a $30,000 bond bail and is expected to appear in court on August 14.

Awake The Empire - HELP NEEDED

Alternative/Electronica band from California, Awaken The Empire, is in dire need of help after their tour van and all belongings were stolen. The band was on tour with Eyes Set To Kill and My Ticket Home at the time the vans and all their personal belongings were stolen. The irony of it all, the tour is called the Show Your True Colors Tour. Despite everything, the band is in a great deal of need.

Their most recent Facebook post said...
INSOMNIACS! Our van was stolen in San Antonio, Texas a couple of days ago. :( We lost all of our gear, clothes, money, personal keepsakes, merch...everything.
We preach following your dreams at all costs, and never letting anyone stand in
your way.. So we see this as an opportunity to prove that we are more than just talk. We are taking a week or so to raise as much money as possible, and then whether we have to hitchhike or steal a helicopter, we are going to reconnect with the tour in Chicago on August 17th!

In order to do this we REALLY need everyones help! Please donate whatever you can to the link below, and we will love you forever. If you have already donated, THANK YOU so much! It really means more than you know. ♥

Close To Home Interview - Momentum

Cincinnati, Ohio band Close To Home recently released their latest studio album Momentum on July 31. The album has gone great lengths in the single week it has been out, reaching the Top 10 Rock Charts on iTunes on its debut day. We did a review on the album which you can view below.

I had the chance to speak with the band about the album and their thoughts on their sophomore label release. Here's what they had to say...

Steve: What about your new album "Momentum" do you really like?
Close To Home: We really like the production on this album. We were fortunate enough to work with someone we have a lot of respect for (Andrew Wade) and value his opinion/input.
Steve: What does the album say about you as a band?
Close To Home: This album kind of tells the story of our day to day lives as musicians and human beings. We like to be able to share our experiences with people because we want to be able to relate to our fans as much as possible.
Steve: What reaction did you expect to get on the release?
Close To Home: We hope that people notice how much our music/lyrics have matured over the years. We're not a band preaching positivity and we're not trying to push people to be negative. We try to put everything into perspective and just be real people.
Steve: What's the biggest difference between "Momentum" and the other music you have put out?
Close To Home: I think we have taken our style of music and finally put together an album that can truly define who Close To Home really is as a band.
Steve: What song off your new album is your favorite, and why?
Close To Home: I love them all equally because each song was inspired from personal experiences: love, stress, partying, traveling, etc.
Steve: What makes this album so significant for you guys?
Close To Home: This is our sophomore label release, and that is always a scary thing for bands because that is usually the album that needs to set you apart from other bands.
Steve: What's a group you really enjoy playing with, and why?
Close To Home: We really enjoy playing with a lot of bands, but I would have to say that We Came As Romans, In Fear & Faith & For All Those Sleeping because we've toured with those bands before and have all become best friends over the years. They are also the only other bands that can party as hard as we can :)
Steve: What's a band you wish to play with some day that you haven't yet, and why?
JJ Cooper (Guitar/Vocals) - Blink 182
Andrew DeNeef (Lead Vocals) - Jimmy Eat World
Josh Wells (Guitar/Vocals) - Thrice
Travis Hartman (Drums) - Lady Gaga
Josh Trenkamp (Touring Bass) - Brand New
These are all very big influences to us.
Steve: What's next for you guys?
Close To Home: Canada for a couple weeks right after the SILYMI Tour and then we plan on taking over the world :)

Hope you all enjoyed it. Again, you can check out our review of Momentum here.

Texas In July Announce the Coming of Self Titled Album

Just announced today (August 7) hardcore/metal band Texas In July will be releasing a brand new self titled album this fall. The album will be the band's third when released October 9. With the announcement of the coming album, the Texas In July will also release the first single off the album a month in advance on September 11. The track is called "Bed of Nails."

“This track is collectively one of our favorite songs that we have ever written as a band,” said lyricist and bassist Ben Witkowski. “For the most part, 'Bed of Nails' was written in the studio. It came together so smoothly and, surprisingly, pretty early on in writing/recording process and quickly became a favored track. We think of it as our hybrid song - it has many contrasting musical parts, as well as a heavy hitting vocal chant near the tail of the song. I really think people are going to be pleased to hear this song. I would love to see this track become our next “Hook Line and Sinner." It’s very memorable, and feels like the perfect track to be released as the first listen for the upcoming record.”

Here is the full track listing...
- Initiate
- Cry Wolf
- Shallow Point
- Without A Head (ft. Chadwick Johnson of Hundredth)
- Bed of Nails
- Repressed Memories
- C4 (ft. Dave Stephens of We Came As Romans)
- Crux Lust
- Paranoia
- Black Magic
- Cloudy Minds (ft. Matt Greiner of August Burns Red)

As you can see, the track has several special guest vocalists and musicians. Greiner is the drummer of August Burns Red, Stephens is the vocalist for We Came As Romans, and Johnson is the vocalist for Hundredth.

Texas In July was recorded at The Machine Shop Studios in Belleville, New Jersey under the bands record label Equal Vision Records. The album will be their second under the label.

Texas In July is currently finishing out the the Scream It Like You Mean It Tour on the red and gold lines. The band will then travel over seas for their end of summer fall tour with For All Eternity. You can view all those details here

I See Stars Release "Filth Friends Unite" Music Video

I See Stars' music video of "Filth Friends Unite," under Sumerian Records, was released August 4. The song is the tenth track off I See Stars' most recent album Digital Renegade from this past March.

"Filth Friends Unite" is the first song off Digital Renegade to have a music video and is the seventh video the band has put out.

In the music video we see the band use masks and several themes from the movie "V For Vendetta," adding a great deal to the song. Too often we see music videos that are generic or that have nothing to do with the song they were created for. However, in this video, the visual and audio messages accomidate each other in a great way using themes and visual objects from a fantastic movie (in my opinion) to clearly get their message across: the government controlling and abusing their power of our rights.

If you haven't seen the video yet, you can check it out below. One of the top music videos of the year in my opinion.
